1997 Minutes of the
Second Meeting of the
Board of Directors of
The National Button Society
The second meeting of the Board of Directors of the National B"utton Society
was held on Friday, August 15, 1997 at the Holiday Inn Madison West,
Middleton. Wis.
President Jane Leslie called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. with a
quorum present consisting of the four elected officers, all directors except
Nancy Fink and Gretchen Payne, the three officer appointees and the three
newly elected directors.
President Jane Leslie thanked the three retiring Board mernbers Sheila
Bird, Jean Longo and Gretchen Payne for all their contributions and
Gretchen's ill health prevented her from being with us this year. A warm
welcome was extended to our three newly elected directors-Jocelyn Howells
of Oregon, Phyllis Haas of Norlh Dakota and Freddie Finch of England
Moved, seconded and carried to dispense with the reading of the minutes
of the first Board meeting as they were presented at the annual rneeting.
President Jane Leslie reminded the Board that the previous meeting
ended in the middle of a discussion of stipends. At this Board rneeting the
following three rnotions were made, seconded and caried:
( 1 ) That the salary of the cun'ent treasurer, secretary and editor be
increased by $1000 retroactive to January l,1997 in recognition ofthe
increased responsibilities of their position.
(2) That the contract for the current show manager be increased by
$1000 retroactive to January l,1997 in recognition ofhis/her position.
(3) That an annual travel allowance of$200 be established forthe Board
of Directors, the first and second vice presidents and the parliamentarian,
when they are in attendance a the annual National Button Society
convention.
Motion rnade to accept the following Memorial Award for Lee Krout
frorn the Molly Pitcher Button Club of Pa. in the amount of $400 (check
enclosed). The award is for strall vegetable ivory, clear and colored glass or
Goodyear, to be determined by the Chairman of Trophies and shall be for a
$40 prize to the winner and to be awarded for ten years. Any monles
accumulated from interest after the ten year period should be transfered to
the Color Fund or allocated as the Board of Directors feels is appropriate.
Amended to add "any money rernaining in the Lee Krout sub-account after
ten awards shall be transferred to the Color Fund. Seconded and carried.
The following motions were made, seconded and carried:
( I ) That the amount of "seed money" donated to state or regional
societies to help defray the costs of hosting the annual National Button
