                        L997 Minutes of the
                        Annual Meeting of

                 The National Button Society
           The fifty-ninth annual meeting  of the National  Button Society was called  to
       order by President  Jane Leslie at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 1997 at the
       Holiday Inn Madison  West. Middleton,  Wisconsin with a quorum present.
           President Jane Leslie  extended  a welcome  to all in attendance and a "big
       thank you to cl.rairpersons  Ruth  Southey  and Peg Hewitt  and all who worked  so
       hard to put on this wonderful show."  Those in attendance agreed with great
       applause  for the l.rost state.
           Moved to dispense with the reading  of the minutes  of the last Annual
       Meeting as they were pLrblished  in the October,  1996 bulletin and to accept the
       minutes as printed.  Seconded  and carried.
       COMMITTEE  REPORTS:
           Bulletin "Frcddic" Speights stated that the December  issue will feature
       color  plates ofbirds.
           Membership:  Lois Pool, secretary,  reported 686 new merrbers, 244 Lrfe
       members. 3492 renewals  for a total gain over last year at this time of I 19 and a
       new record  as of this date of 4438.  We have l0 new or reactivated clubs.
           Second Vice President:  Mary Doyle announced  that Debra Wisniewski of
       Michigan had donated a copy of her recent published  book to the library. A
       donation  was also made by a member of a 1943 National Button Society  favor
       button to be added to the display.
           Exhibits: Denver  Elliott,  chairman,  reporled  the fcrllowing "We have on
       display in Div. I-383 trays, Div.Il-24, Div. III-295,  Div. IV-43,  Div. V1-6, Div.
       VII-34, Div. VIII-27, Div. IX-1164  and 79 more in r,rpen competition for a total
       of 2055 excluding the 36 in the Wisconsin display prepared by Bruce  and Jane
       Beck. That is second  only to Springfield,  Illinois in t98 I with 2123 and that was
       belore the limit ol l0 in operr competition.
           I 3 8 1 trays were checked  in before  4 p.m. Monday  and another  67 4 before 9
       a.n,. Tucsday. I suggest  that, depending  on tbe availabiiity ofthe space, that the
       Monday check-in  be changed  to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Tuesday 7:30 a.m. to 9
       a.m. be scheduled  as a late check in. The last tra)'was  hung  at 6:15 p.m.
       Wednesday.  There were I I awards  with no entries and 13 with only one entry."
           Advertising:  Cathy  Lindauer  requested  that rf any one wishes to advertise  in
       the bulletin  they should contact  her at the show or at ttre address  listed on the
       inside front cover of the bulletin.
           Entries: Norma Camp reported a total of 2850 tray slips sent out, 480
       entered  in open competition and less than 100 were hung. She stated that she felt
       many did not understand the meaning  of open competition.  She further stated  she
       had a new format  for tray slips due to current  confusion  and errors by entrants.
           Awards: Mary Johnson  reported  that the 1998 awards  must  be submitted  by
       the first ofOctober. She requested  that you do not send in awards  until after the
       first of March and urged members to "try the awarci yourself before  you submit it
       to National".
