16 Dec. 1818: Armitage was ordered to make Infantry buttons, 18ffi gr large
and 1260 gr small.
21 Dec. 1818: Messrs. Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill submitted a design, a
sample of a button for the Light Artiuery; convex; copper.
21 Feb. 1820: Advertisement was published inviting bids for making buttons
for the InJ.; Art.; Lt. Art.; & Fliflemen.
23 Feb. 1820: A general order was issued directing "flat, yellow buttons', for
ttre uniforms of the Rifle Regiment.
14 Max. 1820: CGP wrote to General Parker suggesting instead a small sized
button on the bullet order with the device suggested.
25 Apr. 1820: Leavenworth, Hayden & Scovill submitted a sa.mple of a great
coat button.
5 Sept. 1820: Leavenworttr, Hayden & Scovill were ordered to make 50O gross
of Ariillery vest buttons.
6 Sept. 1820: Leavenworth, Hayden & Scoyitl were ordered to make 75 gro
large and 50 gross small great-coat buttons, havrng the Eagle
aIId U S impressed upon ftrem according to the last pattern.
23 Nov. 1820: CGP to Lieut. B. Walker, Ordinance Corps, Watervliet: "Your
letter of the 17th instant is received, asking information which
it is not in my power to give, because ttre ofiicers of the Ord-
nance Corlls, whose duty it unquestionably was, h"ave never that
I have been informed of, submitted for the approbation of ttre
Secrotary of War, a button of suitable form a,nd device for your
corps, nor have I been requested to do so. Capt. Talcoit, of tJre
Ordna,nce CorAs, on his way to Washington, a few days since,
informed me tha,t he would submit to the senior officer of tJxe
Corps, a device for a button, and would endeavor to have some-
thing deflnitely flxed upon the subjecb."
5 Dec. 1820: The CGP to the A & I Gen. (Adjutant & Inspector General)
describetl the unifonns for the rank and flle of the a,rmy: the
buttons were as follows:
Artillery; yellow metal; device, a cannon surmounted by an
eagle, beneath: pile of balls, and the word "Corps" near the
edge of the buuton.
InJantny: white metal; cupped in form, with an eagle impressed
upon them, and the letter I placed in ttre shield thereof.
Light Artillery; yellow metal; cupped in form; having the let-
ters L A and number of the r,egimsrt surrounded by stars,
impressed upon tLrem.
Rifle Flegiment; cupped; a device, a bugle surrounded by stars
with the number of ttre regiment within the curve of ttre bugle.
Engineers; in all respects like those worn by the artillery.
In 1820, Richard Robinson, Attleboro, made 200 gross of Ar-
tillery coat buttoru and 100 gross of Rifle buttons. Armitage atso
had a contract for buttons in 1820.
In 1821, bids were invited from B. Ivers & Co., N. Y., Richard
Robinson, Attleboro, a,rrd Earle, Lee & Co., N. Y., for Artillery
buttons, 400 grGss coat and 200 gross vest.
