VII SUBJECT MATTER PICTORIAL AND PATTE{'N
Subject matter is important here as elsewhere and choice examples of rare
subjects are the ultimate in any select company. Coliectors, however, are not per-
suaded that pictorial subjects have priority over aII else. witness how they mount
clear and colored glass. Is it by subject matter? Not often. It is for color, con-
stluction, make-up or other qualities that bring out the beauty of the material.
"Red glass" is hung in every show; but "Birds, clear and colored glass,, when?
Though the birds are a bit more challenging than the red, they are not enough so
to explain their absence. "Plant life, clear and colored glass assorted,'would be no
challenge at all. Yet it is not a popular class. It could however be made so.
A detailed classification of pictorial designs and patterns is printed in the Bul-
letin every March. It need not be reprinted here. Suffice it to illustrate a few
     classes.
