On March 11, 1812, Leavenworth, HaydeD & Scovill of Waterbuly,
Connecticut, were ordered to nlake the pattern shown in specimen No. oue
above, for the Riflemen.

In 1820, the Rifle button was cupped: the device, a bugle surrounded
by stars *'ith the number of the Regiment within the curve of the bugle, and
Richard Robinson of Attleboro was ordered to nake 100 gross. See brtttotr
No. three.
ln 1821, the above device was adopted and used for all subseq[ent l{ifle-
rnen until they were discontinued in 1861.
The above patterns of old Rifle buttons have been found and were prob-
ably made for the Militia. The one on the I'ight was made by A. M. Peasly.

A l'ecent annive|sary of this famous rnilitaly olganization calls ouI at-
tention to the fact, that the Filst Colps of Cadets of tsoston is one of the
oldest lnilitary olganizations in the nation, still in active military service.
This organzation was knol'n as "The Goventor"s Independent Corllrarry
of Cadets" aud later in 17S6'rl'as l'eorganized as the Independe[t Colnpan]r'
of Cadets. The date of oligin is some*'hat iudefinite due to the destructiotr
of the l'ecords by fire. The date of iustitutiotr t'ecot'ded on the buttort is
1786 while the date on the six-poittted star ernblern of the Cadets is 17'1 1.
