5-1 . Many of our snap-togethers are round. This example has a lovely
openwork portion. The rest has a colored piece which snaps into two holes
above and below the gold metalized self-shank. The manufacturer
interchanges several different colored pieces to match the gament. This one
features the lirne shade so popular in the '97 collections, but also carne in
tangerine and bluc. Madc and purchased in Argentina.
5-8. This lovely scalloped button could be considered imitation smoky
pearl or agate, with a faceted ball gold metalized center which snaps through.
5-9. Modified squares: (a) rounded corners help create a "deco" look on
this older snap-together, where the brown top piece snaps through the white
metalized back which features two openwork rectangles. (b) This scalloped
square has a row of pink plastic balls which snap through the yellow
       metalized base.
       5-10. (See Card 2 Square 9.)
5- I l. Diamond: white metalized openwork base forms a frame around the
       black "velvet" center.
5-12. Stylized heart: The translucent pink frosted center snaps through the
       gold metalized back.
5-13. Here the star shape is considered a pattern (and not Sect. l5
astronomical) and can therefore be counted as a linear shaoe (and not a
       realistic).
5-14. Oval: Opaque pink center snaps through a gold metalized openwork
       frame.
       5-15. Other linear shapes-irregular: (a) scroll-like border, (b) lop-sided "bird
nest" with three gold metalized "eggs" in center, snapping through back.
5-16. White plastic spiral snaps into yellow metalized irregular-shaped
       spiral, resembling a snail-like design.
5-17 , Although this is a realistic golf ball on a tee, it can alternatively be
counted as a contour shape, thanks to the high-dimension golf ball.
5-18. The boy's head on a round background is a good example ofcontour
shape, as it is so 3-dimensional.
5-19. Other contour shapes exist, but aren't real common in snap-togethers.
Look for domes, balls, conical, chunky or bulky shapes and you should have
no problem finding at least one example for each tray. This one is cylindrical.
5- 10. Realistic lyre. The black center part was snapped through two holes
beside and below the white self-shank at the factory, after which the dowels
were flattened slightly to prevent the piece coming off.

Your questions and comments are welcomed. Hopefully this article will give
you new ways to look at snap-togethers, and enhance our understanding and
appreciation of this new category of collectible modem buttons. I believe our
rules should be as inclusive as logically possible, so we can use our buttons to
the maximum and have as much fun as oossible with our hobbv.
