                       THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

                                   Dear Friends,
Spring at last! As we watch the flowers and
trees explode with color, it reminds us that there is
a new beginning for all of nature, which includes
you and me. It is time to shift gears and take
advantage of our beautiful environment and to
enjoy the beauty of our buttons and our hobby.
                                   What adventures lie ahead?
As I write this, we have just concluded another
successful National Button Week. I have heard
from many of our members telling me what they
planned to do during this week. I am beginning to
receive newspaper articles and photographs of
displays for our scrapbook and best of all, I am
            Jean Speights, President
hearing about person to person contact with the
general public through formal programs and one on one conversations, spreading the
         word about our wonderful hobby.
This will be my last opportunity as your president to promote this celebration of
our hobby. Even though I will not be in office in the coming years, please keep up the
custom. we have such pleasure to share and believe me, we get more out of it than we
         could ever give.
It is now time to turn our energies toward the National Show in August. Since it
has now been deteremined that our shows will be held some six weeks or so earlier than
in the past to enable those of us who are connected with our educational sysrem ro
attend, everything will have to be done much earlier. The pre-registration form and
hotel information are included in this issue. Please use them. The super deal we are
getting with the hotel ($55 per night for I to 4 people) will be effective only until July
16, so if you dont't want to pay full price ($90 to $130 per night), please make your
reservations now and don't forget to tell the reservations clerk that you are with the
         National Button Society.
we have had some complaints about having the show in August in Dallas. Those
who have expressed such problems are concerned with the heat. Is it hot in Dallas in
August? You're darned tootin'it is-but on the other hand, iust how much time do you
spend outside the hotel during a show? Everything is air-conditioned and I would even
suggest that those ofyou who are not accustomed to airconditioning bring a sweater. I
assure you that our accomodations are very comfortable.
The theme this year is "The circus" so make your plans to really let your hair down
and have a ball. At the Open House on Thursday evening, we will have a clown
contest, so if you're so inclined, bring along a clown costume and join in the fun.
We have a special surprise for you in this issue-color in May! This is possible
through the generosity of Dr. John R. Adams, widower of our beloved Jane Ford
Adams. He has donated Jane's entire collection to the San Diego Button club to sort,
clean, card, price and sell so that we may have color in our Bulletins every May.
Already we have enough money to pay for this issue and this is just the beginning! In
addition, he has given Jane's ten Firmin sample books to National to be auctioned on
wed nesday evening at our show. All proceeds will be added to the JFA color fund for
the Bulletin. As if this isn't overwhelming enough, he has also donated many pieces of
ceramics done by Lillian Smith Albert, another legendary name in our hobby, to the
auction. So save your pennies and take advanta. ' this once in a lifetime
opportunity! Further details are in this issue.
