       The President's Message

       Dear Friends,
This is my last letter to you as President and I'm
writing it with very mixed feelings.
I wish all the incoming officers good luck and that they
will have the support and cooperation I received.
No charm strings to report this month. In fact, I haven't
found a single button to buy.
                                                         Jane Leslie,
Our local club had a competition for our l2 ugliest
                                                         President
buttons (an ugly button to the winner!). I thought that won't
filI a meeting but with Joan MacFarlane in charge, it did and was quite
interesting. She and Joanne Wyman judged them per NBS rules and we all
leamed a lot about judging and competing and goodness knows, I have a lot to
       learn!
As the Chairman of Judges always says, "Give them the benefit of any
doubt". Let us apply that to our every day encounters with our button friends.
Don't judge others until you've been in their shoes. I heard an awful lot of
gossip, whispers just plain not nice talk at our last National. Please don't
                     -
repeat rumors and let's get on with the fascinating hobby of collecting buttons
       (and friends).
I hope I've done some good as your President or at the least, done no hatm
                                                   Regards,
                                                   JANE

            The Cover Button

               This strange ship of almost
           perfect symmetry, from the collection
of the late Juanita Hill of Kansas, is a
Button Beyond the Button Books. It
has both sails and a side paddle wheel
for steam. Cannon porlholes indent the
side. Notice the men on fore and aft like
forever lookouts and the French-sounding name
"MOEVE" stamped in the paddle wheel. What a haunting designl
This ship is also a symbolic invitation from the Editor to our
many members to embark on an adventurous sailing through the
           pages ofthe July issue.
