                ENLISTED MEN'S  RUBBER  U. S. NAVY BUTTONS
            Several variants of these molded  rubber buttons have been  reported
        recently. In the group  illustrated  here, from the collection of Mrs. Lily
        Lebus of California, there are two distinct patterns-the  upright anchor
        :Lnd the horizontal anchor.
            If  any of our readers know of other variants, the writer would  be
        pleased to hear about them.
                          UPRIGHI' ANCIIOR  PATTNRN
        1. A siightly raised rim around  each hole; 32 mm.
             "NOVELTY  RUBBER  Co. /  1851."
             "GOODYEAR'S  /  PATENT."  raised.
        2.  No rim around  holes; 31 mm.
             "NOVELTY  RUIIBER Co. / NEW-YORK."
             "GOODYEAR'S  PATENT. /  1849-1851"  impressed.
                        HORIZONTAL ANCI{OR PATIERN
        b.  No period after the letters " U S N;" 33 mm.
             "NOVELTY  RUBBER  Co. / NEW-YORK."
             "GOODYEAR'S  PATENT. /  1849-51" impressed.
        4.  The holes are cut sharply;  35 mm,
             ..NOVELTY   RUBBER  Co. /  NE.W YORK.',
             "GOODYEAR'S  PATENT  /  1857" raised.
        5.  A raised rim around each hole: 35 mm.
             "NOVELTY  RUBBER  Co /  NEW YORK."
             "GOODYEAR'S  PATENT  /  t851" raised.
        6. No rim around holes: 35 mm.
             '.NOVELTY RUBBER  Co. /  NEW-YORK.''
             "GOODYEAR'S  PATENT. / 1849-51." impressed.
           Note: The first line refers to the outer circle of the backmark and the
       second  line to the inner circle.
